In French the novel, and film is known as Le Scaphandre et le Papillon. Jean-Dominque Bauby, a forty-two-year-old man suffers from a massive stroke. Bauby survives, but suffers from what's known as "locked in syndrome." An extremely rare condition where the patient is completely immobile, but the brain continues to function perfectly. Frame by frame the film is a flickering work of art. Orchestrated exquisitely by world renowned artist Julian Schnabel {who decided to try his hand at directing.} The plot unfolds regret while visiting memories and simple pleasantries of Bauby's past. I was inspired to live, feel, and be grateful for every breath and movement. Please rent this gorgeous piece of cinema.
